Uasin Gishu County is set to benefit from an irrigation programme dubbed Kenya Climate Smart Agriculture Programme.
According to Uasin Gishu governor Jackson Mandago, the project sponsored by World Bank aims at increasing the commercial benefit of the farmer through intense agriculture by doing irrigation.
“We have identified two areas for this program that is Chemusian dam in Olare Ainabkoi Ward, and Kapseret sub-county," Mandago said.
He spoke after meeting officials from the World Bank Mission on Kenya Climate Smart Agriculture Programme at his office on Monday.
“This project which will cost Sh104 million is meant to benefit 200-300 households but we are targeting to put under irrigation 100 acres in Chemusian through the water from Salama Dam that we are currently disilting,” Mandago said.
He noted that the project is also happening in 24 counties across the country, adding that 12 counties in the North Rift region will benefit.
He assured the World Bank Mission that money will be used for the intended purpose and encouraged farmers to do afforestation for the county to achieve 10 percent forest cover.
