Sam Onyango Okello quietly exited the Kisumu mayoral throne after local authorities become defunct following the 2013 general elections.
The former local form of government was replaced by the current devolved systems of government led by the governor and his deputy on one hand and the Speaker of the County Assembly on the other hand.
Okello served as Kisumu mayor between 2008 and 2013, before quietly exiting the stage to perhaps sit down and reflect on his achievements and failures as Kisumu’s last mayor.
Last year, the former Mayor was among a host of candidates who were seeking the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party ticket o vie for the Kisumu Central Member of Parliament (MP) seat.
He lost to the current MP Fred Ouda who was by then Siaya County’s Central Gem Ward Member of the County Assembly (MCA).
After last year’s elections, Okello again made a technical disappearance from Kisumu’s political scene. Currently, he is a member of the newly formed Kisumu City board alongside Lawrence Gumbe, John Ombija, Kennedy Akoko, Charles Ochome, Elijah Adul, Rose Olende, Peris Ochola, former nominated MCA Salim Ahmed Salim, Sheila Okal and Sagar Navichandra.
Kisumu governor Prof. Peter Anyang Nyong’o formed the board to spearhead Kisumu City’s development plans.
The board did not exist under former governor Jack Ranguma.
