A woman who recently murdered her son by poisoning him has been handed a 15-year jail term.
Halima Bwakali was found guilty of lacing her 12-year-old son's drink with pesticide at their Khwisero Sub-county home on December 23, 2018.
Appearing before Kakamega High Court Judge Jesse Njagi, on Tuesday, the woman was handed the term.
This was in addition to the 7-year term she is already serving for attempting to kill herself and her 6-year-old daughter using the same poison.
The judge said that he did not sentence the accused to death despite being in a position to, deciding to give her a lenient judgment after she raised claims of having been emotionally stressed and frustrated at the time of the offense.
"I, therefore, consider a prison sentence to be appropriate in the circumstances of the case and sentence the accused to serve 15 years in prison,” he was quoted by the Nation.
Bwakali told the court that she resorted to killing herself and her children after her stepbrothers ejected her from her home after a quarrel.
The ruling came shortly after the accused was convicted by a magistrate in a separate ruling for the attempt on her life and that of her daughter, who also survived the attempt.
The court was told that the boy collapsed at a neighbor's home while playing with his friends and died shortly after consuming the liquid.
