The national government and that of Kilifi County have joined efforts to improve the status of a 300-acre beachfront in Malindi that is set to see tourism beefed up in the area.
The enhancement of the beachfront linking Vasco Da Gama Pillar in Malindi and river Sabaki in Magarini has had Kilifi County Government put 30 acres around Vasco Da Gama Pillar under a pilot project.
The move will see the institutionalization of modern beach facilities including two beach soccer fields, changing rooms, showers, a parking lot that will accommodate not less than 100 cars, performance area, composite walkways, and cyclist paths, and tourists’ information office.
Speaking to the press on Thursday after leading a multi-stakeholder team of government officials in inspecting the pilot project, Kilifi Tourism CeC Nahida Mohammed said that the project will enhance the image of Malindi town.
“We are initiating new and exciting facilities because we believe that is what attracts the modern tourism. We expect trade and hotels to open up to take up the market opportunities as tourism will be booming immediately we wind up the project,” she added.
Speaking at the same event, the national government’s chief architect Sylvester Kiua Muli said the project, whose first phase is expected to be completed in three months, will provide a tourist market and cultural hub that will display artefacts and cultures from all corners of the country.
Muli added, “there will be activities that will be happening here that are yet to happen in other parts of the country. We will have fish sports, golf centre, and many other modern tourists attracting activities.”
However, the chief architect added that the exact cost of the mega project is yet to be established since it is still at its designing process.
