Kirinyaga County's governor Ann Waiguru has been accused by Charles Kibiru, the county's senator over failure to heed to his calls to service the county's Sh531 million in arrears owed to contractors.
Speaking on Sunday Senator Kibiru who is also a member of the Senate Committee on Public Accounts and Investments claimed he has had to seek the intervention of the Auditor General after his advice fell on deaf ears.
The money was supposed to be paid to the contractors who got tenders to work on water, road, dispensary and bridge projects, and also the supply of various commodities during the reign of former Governor Joseph Ndathi.
"I have written to the Governor and even the Auditor-General over the accumulated debts but nothing has been done," Mr Kibiru said.
The Senator's concern stemmed from the fact that the contractors were being auctioned for the loans that they took while carrying out the tenders for the county.
He further requested for the National Treasury to withhold the county's funds.
"Treasury should not release funds to Governor Waiguru's government until she agrees to pay the contractors their rightful dues," he stated.
Reports from Nation indicate that the contractors had threatened to take legal action against the Kirinyaga county government over the debt, citing that a number of the contractors were experiencing challenges.
