Deputy President William Ruto’s journey to the highest office in the country seems to be encountering more challenges long before the official kick-off of the 2022 campaigns.
Ruto who has deputised president Uhuru Kenyatta for two terms is now on a mission to clinch the seat in the coming general elections.
According to the DP’s political plans, the Mt Kenya region will pay back the favour he offered to President Kenyatta in 2013 and 2017 by campaigning and delivering Rift Valley’s votes to Uhuru’s basket.
He has also been making frequent visits to regions which have been perceived to be opposition strongholds in what it appears to be efforts to win the hearts of voters from these regions.
However, the political games and war going on in his home region as a result of maize prices and scandals can completely shatter the dreams of the self-proclaimed hustler of becoming the country’s next president.
It is evident that maize prices have divided Ruto’s empire as his supporters are left between supporting the government’s maize prices or protesting against the prices set.
MPs allied to Ruto in Rift Valley have all decided to take sides, some rejecting the price set by the government while others have opted to remain loyal to the DP and the government while branding their protesting counterparts as 'hired' mercenaries.
This division is dangerous to Ruto’s ambitions and will guarantee him a lose in the coming general elections if he will not address this issue at the right time.
