Despite being born of a billionaire father and a man who would later take over the nation for over 24 years, the late Jonathan Toroitich Moi was not known to live a prestigious life.

Unlike his siblings, including his brothers Gideon and Raymond Moi, Jonathan was not as close to his, father retired President Daniel Toroitich Moi, and appeared more interested in his own things.

It appears that his main mistake came in 1979 when the then 20-year-old lad decided to stick to his mother Lena Moi even as the others moved with their father to his Kabarak home.

This was after their parents completed their divorce procedure and what followed for Lena was years of humiliation, and was not allowed to attend any of her children's weddings.

This created a gap between Jonathan and his father that led to his younger siblings receiving better treatment than him and enjoying national recognition while he remained a local man.

His friends say that he even joined locals in Eldama Ravine to drink local brew as his brothers were enjoying luxury brought about by their father's fortunes and power.

“He enmeshed himself in the local scene and would drink beer with locals. That is how he lived,” a friend of the former rally driver told the Nation.

While his other siblings who also include John Mark and Doris Moi Jennifer and Phillip proceeded to acquire millions worth of investments on their father's name, the late Jonathan was busy with his rallying ventures.

Apart from his Kabimoi farm, Jonathan is not known to have any more wealth, and his ageing bungalow in the farm also proves that he was a man who was just surviving.

Its dusty driveway also tells a lot about Jonathan's lifestyle.

He was also locked off family matters, he was not the family spokesman as should be, considering that he is the eldest son, the post going to Gideon who is the last born.
