Uasin Gishu governor Jackson Mandago has insisted that 60 percent of new job opportunities that will be created at the Rift Valley Textile Company (RIVATEX) in Eldoret should be preserved for the locals.
Speaking during a visit to the Moi University-owned company, Mandago noted that ongoing modernization of the factory must positively impact on the locals' livelihoods.
“We have a lot of unemployed youths in this county and all we request and hope is that at least 60 percent of the jobs that will be created after completion of this modernization exercise goes towards employing some of them,” he said.
Mandago who had accompanied Indian envoy to Kenya Suchitra Durai to inspect ongoing modernization of the factory noted that once the process is complete, the factory will create over 3,000 direct jobs.
The governor further reaffirmed his administrations' commitment to partnering with Moi University to ensure the factory implements programs that will benefit locals.
In 2016, Rivatex received a Sh3 billion loan from the Indian government through the Exim Bank to enable it to purchase modern machinery in a bid to revamp its operations.
