Villagers in Kisii were left in shock after a middle-aged man eloped with his cousin.
Addressing this writer on Thursday, residents at Kiabosura village in Bomorenda, Bonchari said that the man, Ronald Onsombi, ran away with his cousin Immaculate Nyabonyi.
“Onsombi and Nyabonyi are cousins. We are shocked because Onsombi eloped with her, married her as his wife and they are now living in a rented house five kilometres from Onsombi’s home,” said James Morikwa.
Morikwa who doubles up as the area Nyumba Kumi official said the two lovebirds have threatened to end their lives if forced to separate.
“We don’t know what to do because they have threatened to take poison if we continue forcing them to divorce. The Gusii culture does not recognise marriages between relatives,” he said.
Area chief Erick Obangi said he has summoned the lovebirds to appear in his office five times but in vain.
“I am not going to condone such marriages in my area of administration. Nyabonyi and Onsombi must divorce or they will face the law. I have instructed Nyumba Kumi officials to arrest them and bring them to me before Monday next week,” he said.
The chief asked parents to advise their children accordingly in a bid to ensure they do not engage in illicit relationships.
