Last week, Brigadier Kimei Kipng'etich was buried at Uasin Gishu, after 17 years since he left State House as President Daniel Moi's Aides-de-Camp, a prestigious position for the men in uniform.
An Aide-de-Camp, reports the Sunday Nation, is an assistant or aide to a senior officer within the military ranks.
For this matter, an ADC is an aide to the president as the Commander in Chief of armed forces.
Throughout his 24 years at State House, Moi was served by six ADCs, with all of them picked from Kenya Army. They either served in the ranks of Major or Lieutenant Col. at the time of elevation.
The first to serve was Brigadier Samuel Macharia, who was inherited from Mzee Jomo Kenyatta.
When Moi assumed Presidency, he moved on well with Macharia before elevating him in 1979 to be the Commander, Kahawa Garrison.
Major General Peter Ikenye took over from Macharia.
He served even during Moi's lowest moment in 1982 when a section of Kenya Air Force officers attempted a coup.
At that time, Ikenye was with Moi in Kabarak and was part of the team which accompanied the former Head of State to Nairobi when normalcy had been restored.
Brigadier Wilson Boinet took over days after the coup when Moi completely changed his leadership style. Boinet would serve for a whopping 8 years.
A verbal exchange with him and former powerful minister Nicholas Biwot so him transferred to Zambia.
He would later be recalled to serve in the National Intelligence Service and almost lost his job in 2002 when he frankly said Uhuru Kenyatta would not be president.
After his stint, Boinet was replaced by Brigadier Alex Sietinei. The former teacher cum journalist is credited fora revolution in the position.
During his 8 years in service, he often wrote speeches for the president besides helping him perform other complex duties. He was promoted in 1998 to head Western Command.
Then came Lieutenant General Jonathan Rono who stayed during Moi's last term in office. Mr Rono witnessed transition during the hard KANU politics.
He was promoted to Command Eastern Region and retired in 2016 having served as Head AMISOM in Somalia.
And Kimei Kipng'etich served as Moi's ADC during his last six months at State House.
He witnessed high octane politics that saw Moi booed at Uhuru Park during the transition in 2002.
He died recently after a long illness. He was promoted to National Defense College after his stint at State House
