US President Donald Trump abruptly cancelled a visit to Denmark after his offer to buy Greenland was turned down outright.
Trump was scheduled to visit Denmark after an invitation by the country's queen Margrethe II.
Danish PM Mette Frederiksen branded the American president's offer as odd, expressing her hope that Trump was not serious.
Trump announced the abrupt cancellation of the scheduled trip on Twitter, sparking bewilderment in various quarters.
In the tweet, he made it clear that the Danish PM's lack of interest in having a discussion about his offer were behind the cancellation.
"Denmark is a very special country with incredible people, but based on Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen’s comments, that she would have no interest in discussing the purchase of Greenland, I will be postponing our meeting scheduled in two weeks for another time...." he tweeted.
Trump's abandonment of the visit comes just two days after he said that buying Greenland would of great strategic importance to the United States.
The idea that a country can buy another one was met with widespread bafflement.
There has been no response to the cancellation of the visit from Copenhagen.
On Sunday, Trump confirmed to members of the American press that he had asked officials in his government to explore the possibility of purchasing Greenland.
