The GK Prison Malindi police boss Hamisi Bakari has revealed the dire challenges they face while taking prisoners to court and back.
Given the nature of the prisoners who he terms as dangerous, Bakari now calls for the County government of Kilifi and the National government to intervene and help them enhance smooth operations in the prison.
Hamisi points out that the Malindi town - GK Malindi Prison road is in pathetic condition and need to be repaired. Being a marram road, it has a lot of potholes which spoil their vehicles.
"The challenge we have here, we don't have a tarmac road. We have only two vehicles which go up to 60 KM each, per day. Because of the nature of the prisoners we have who are dangerous, it forces us to go at a high speed that the prisoners cannot jump out of the lorry. As the lorry is open," Hamisi said.
He also said the speed and the nature of the road has made the lorries to break down frequently. He also pointed out the inadequacy of the police vehicles yet it's one of the maximum prisons in Kenya.
Hamisi equally asked the government to perhaps provide another vehicle that is not open, a bus, for easier operations.
