At least nine people were been killed following a grisly road accident involving a passenger bus belonging to the BusCar company and a trailer, along Mombasa-Nairobi highway.
The Wednesday morning accident near Emali in Makueni County left over 20 passengers seriously injured and others unaccounted for.
Kilungu police boss Paul Odede said at least 10 passengers of the bus could have been burned beyond recognition after the two vehicles burst into flames after the head-on collision.
"Remains of some of the passengers who were burned beyond recognition are still trapped in the wreck of the bus," said Odede adding that officers would help in removing the bodies.
He added that the bus tried to overtake another vehicle before colliding with the truck on Wednesday morning.
On his part, Makueni County Commissioner Mohammed Maalim termed the incident as unfortunate, saying his officers would commence investigations to ascertain the cause of the fire.
"The vehicles collided head-on and went up in flames. The bus was trying to overtake another vehicle when the crash happened. The bus was heading to Mombasa with 39 passengers onboard while the truck was heading to Nairobi," he told the press
