The independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has set the date for the Ugenya parliamentary by-election for April 5.
The Ugenya seat fell vacant after the Supreme Court's nullification of area lawmaker Chris Karan's election in the previous August 8 2017 general polls in December.
The election was successfully petitioned by David Ochieng' of the Movement for Democracy and Growth (MDG).
The latter cited election malpractices, among them use of malicious propaganda during the election period by Karan's allies from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party.
In a gazette notice on Friday, IEBC directed all parties seeking to participate in the race to conduct their primaries and present the names of their nominated candidates by January 21.
“Each political party intending to participate in the by-election shall submit the names of the persons contesting in a party primary and the date of the party primary on or before Monday, 21st January, 2019,” read the notice as was seen by the Citizen Digital.
Among candidates who have since announced interest in the seat is Karan, Ochieng' and Executive Director of Global Peace Foundation Daniel Juma who is eyeing the ODM ticket.
However, the ODM party has since settled on Karan as its candidate.
