Slain businesswoman Monica Kimani was detained at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport after her arrival from Juba due to large amount of undeclared money, local media has claimed.
Ms. Kimani's lifeless body was discovered at her Kilimani apartments in a bathtub and police have since arrested Joseph Irungu and TV anchor Jacque Maribe in connection to the gruesome murder.
According to undercover officers in East Africa's busiest airport, Ms. Kimani was destined by Custom and Immigration officers without the knowledge of the police for four hours but would later be released after intervention by unidentified persons.
At that time, the officers claim, she had money in foreign currency, a sum that she'd not indicated when she traveled.
But Immigration Principal Secretary Gordon Kihalangwa dismisses the reports, adding that had she been detained, records would have been accessed easily.
"One thing I am sure of is that Monica never had a diplomatic passport as had been claimed. She bore the ordinary one,” he said.
"Secondly, with regard to whether she was detained for failing to declare the money she had, am not aware because that is the docket of the customs department."
But according to one of the officers, the officials behind her detention may have already tampered with records, adding that she was not subjected to proper procedure this absence of receipts at the JKIA on her transaction.
Further, he claims, detectives should review CCTV cameras on the day Monica landed in Kenya to ascertain the truth.
"If you ask any KAA staff about Monica Kimani's flight details, definitely you will hit a dead end. All the flights details have been taken," said the officer.
He added: "We have a machine to screen people and another for goods. Those machines are accurate. The money must have been seen. CCTV cameras should be reviewed and the KAA officer who allowed her to pass arrested and prosecuted."
Detectives have already moved to South Sudan where Monica stayed with claims that she was in a relationship with former warlord cum politician Awet Akot guiding investigators.
Last week, Gen Awet, who now acts as Presidential Advisor on Military, dismissed the claims malicious even as detectives struggle to establish the motive of the murder.
Mr. Irungu and his fiance Jacque Maribe have since denied involvement in the murder and their bail application will be heard on October 24th.
