In a race where ODM's Chris Karan was predicated to win, Orengo often hit at Ochieng', accusing him of being sponsored by Deputy President William Ruto, a critic of Raila Odinga.

"A vote for Ochieng' is a vote to DP Ruto. A vote to Karan is a vote to Raila Odinga. We know how money is exchanging hands within the constituency," said Orengo in one of the campaigns.

Mr Orengo was once President of University of Nairobi students body that challenged governments in 70s. He left SONU in 1973 before joining national politics in 1979.

But in an interview on Monday, Ochieng' said people are keen to elect development conscious leaders, adding that Orengo's tactics may have become obsolete.

“Orengo’s politics is gone. He has refused to change his university type of politics which no longer works for the masses,” Ochieng’ stated.

During the closely contested election, Ochieng' garnered 18,730 votes to Karan's 14,510. It was a major defeat to ODM party which even made the deputy president William Ruto to mock the Orange party.

But on Monday, Mr Odinga rubbished claims that the loss in Ugenya and Embakasi South was a sign of dwindling fortunes of his party, insisting that the contest was between NASA family.
