Hundreds of passengers travelling from upcountry after a long festive season have been stranded in various bus and matatu stages in Eldoret town.
This is after Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) increased fares following a high demand.
According to John Wafula, a passenger travelling to Nairobi, fares have been doubled forcing them to dig dipper into their pockets.
“I woke up very early in the morning so that I can travel to Nairobi but I was shocked to find out that a place where I used to pay at most Sh800 is now Sh2,000,” Wafula lamented.
He called on Cabinet Secretary for Interior Fred Matiangi to intervene for sanity to prevail in the public transport sector.
“It’s sad that the matatu and bus operators have hiked the fares despite a government directive requiring them to maintain the current prices. CS Matiangi should intervene since we are being exploited,” he added.
Mary Nduta, a passenger travelling to Nakuru opted to go back to her home and wait for a few days with hopes that the fares would drop to the normal charges.
She said she is used to paying Sh400 but now she is being charged Sh800 which she cannot afford.
