Police in Rioma are investigating a case where an elderly businessman from the area is accused of defiling and impregnating a 13-year-old standard seven pupil.
According to Marani Assistant County Commissioner (ACC) Fred Sungu, the suspect, Peter Obara, a renowned businessman has allegedly been in a love affair with the pupil who studies in a local school.
"Seems they have been doing it. They had procured an abortion on 11th of this month in one of the clinics around Rioma Market and that is when the information was leaked by a wellwisher who reported to the Police," said Sungu in a phone interview on Monday.
The newly posted ACC further said defilement cases are on the rise in Marani because a majority of them go unreported by the parents.
"Parents don't report these cases. They are many and not reported at all. We are working closely with the police. Already the affected victims and the accused have recorded statements and we will not relent on this," he said.
He also cautioned parents who hide such cases advising them to always report for further action.
Area chief Tom Ochwang confirmed the incident but refused to comment further.
"Yes I received the case but late on Saturday. The police are with the case and kindly follow it up from the ACC Marani. Am limited to comment further on this issue," Ochwang said.
