Kabazi MCA Dr Peter Mbae’s petition to the National Assembly that seeks to address challenges facing the elderly has received backing from Rift Valley Council of elders.
The petition that is already before the MPs seeks that the National Government releases the money to National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) to cater for the elderly, orphans and vulnerable children as well as persons living with a disability.
Addressing media on Thursday during their meeting at Kabazi Centre in Subukia sub-county, the Rift Valley Council of elders vowed to support the petition which they say will go a long way in ensuring the welfare of the elderly is considered.
While decrying the delays in the remittance of the Inua Jamii cash transfer to the elderly as per the government promise, the elders are optimistic that the petition is the only solution to address the same.
Led by their Patron Gilbert Kabage, the over 200 elders called on the speaker of the National Assembly Justin Muturi and the MPs to take the petition seriously and ensure it sails through.
“As elders, we shall be watching keenly and we urge the National Assembly leaders to ensure the debate on the petition is fruitful,” said Kabage.
According to the Kabazi MCA, challenges surrounding the elderly are what prompted his petition.
In the petition that was received by the clerk of the National Assembly, Dr Mbae notes that those who are supposed to benefit with the fund are not benefiting since the money has not reflected in their NHIF cards.
The petition also seeks to ensure that there are continuous registration and updates on the exact number of the elderly, and other vulnerable groups in society.
