Nakuru Roads executive Lucy Wanjiku Kariuki who has been accused of gross misconduct has come out to defend herself following an impeachment motion against her.
The impeachment motion against Kariuki is set to be tabled in the Nakuru County Assembly on July 16, where she will answer accusations leveled against her which include incompetence and abuse of office.
Kariuki has, however, denied the accusations saying that her office has been working to improve the county despite her department being understaffed and lacked skilled manpower.
She said poor service delivery by her department was due to lack of enough resources and skilled manpower.
Kariuki noted that she was misquoted as using abusive and derogatory language against Kuresoi and Molo residents, and denied claims that her office was inaccessible to members of the public and Ward Reps.
“I am aware of the devastating effects such statements could cause. The statement could have been made because the region witnessed political upheavals in 1992. I come from the region and I have blood relations in Kuresoi and Molo,” said Kariuki as quoted by Nation.
“Service delivery depends on the staff in the department, availability of resources and skills among the staff,” she added.
On claims that she failed to implement various development programmes which include street lighting project, she said the project was stopped due to huge bills.
“The street lighting programme is currently not being implemented owing to concerns by the executive over costs of maintenance and huge bills.
“A consultant has been engaged to advise the county government on the best way to light the streets without incurring huge expenses,” said Kariuki.
