President Uhuru Kenyatta has named the new National Land Commission.
The commander in chief of the armed forces picked lawyer Gerishom Otachi to take over the commission for the next six years following the retirement of Prof Mahammad Swazuri.
In a letter addressed to the National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi, the commander in chief of the armed forces asked the members of parliament to approve the names of the new appointees to spearhead operations of the commission.
Otachi, who was part of the defense team for former Police Commissioner Hussein Ali’s legal after he was mentioned in the cases against humanity at the International Criminal Court, is expected to take over the position.
Uhuru also named former Labour Cabinet Secretary Samuel Kazungu Kambi, former Isiolo Woman Rep Tiya Galgalo, Ms Hubbie Hussein Al-Haji, Mr Alister Murimi Mutugi, former Nyeri Town MP Esther Murugi, Prof James Tuitoek, Reginald Okumu, and Getrude Nduku Nguku.
“Standing Order 45 requires that upon receipt of notification of nomination for appointments such nominations shall stand committed to the relevant departmental committee,” Mr Muturi says in his communication, as quoted Daily Nation.
The commissioners will have to wait longer for their approval after Parliament went on recess. The President confirmed that the selection process was based on nothing but merit.
