Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria has raised concerns over the numerous fire incidents that have been reported at Gikomba Market since 2014.
In a post on his official Facebook page, the vocal MP sympathised with the traders after another fire broke out at the market on Wednesday night.
Kuria recalled how he was arrested and charged with incitement in 2014 for championing for the rights of the traders after an attack which he said involved 'bombs, grenades and fire'.
"I was arrested and charged with incitement only to be acquitted after three years of endless court appearances. Since then no year passes without Gikomba being burnt down. After the last fire, traders wanted to rebuild the market. They were told not to do it. That Nairobi County Government and State Department of Housing will do it. Nothing to date," read Kuria's post in part.
Kuria further expressed his anger with the government's failure to build the traders a new market, adding that he received the news of the fire incident with a heavy heart. He called on the government to act in a bid to avert such fire incidents which have been occurring at the market annually.
"I don't want any trouble with anyone but my eyes are wet and heart is heavy. I am seething with anger. Surely even if we don’t do some things because of responsibilities given to us by the people, can’t we do it because there is a God in heaven who watches over us?" asked Kuria.
No injuries were reported during the incident. The fire was contained by firefighters from the Nairobi County fire department.
