Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu has supported the calls for a referendum.
Ngilu said the constitution needs to be amended to end the inequalities that have created tribal divisions in the country.
The NARC governor, however, said politicians opposing constitutional review should not be demonized.
She said the country is facing serious issues which can be solved if the constitution is amended.
Ngilu said the country’s ballooning wage bill, electoral reforms, and injustices are key issues that need to be addressed.
“I agree with leaders who are proposing for constitutional review because it is necessary and will help us get out of the mess we are in,” Ngilu said.
She addressed the press in Kitui town on Monday.
Ngilu asked the Jubilee government to dialogue with leaders on the referendum issue.
She said it will be unfair for the government to shrug off calls for a referendum.
“I know it is costly but it will be for the interests of Kenyans in terms of strengthening service delivery,” she said.
On Sunday, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka faulted calls for a referendum.
Kalonzo said the constitution is not ripe for any amendments.
A section of politicians led by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga is championing for a constitutional review.
Others leaders led by Deputy President William Ruto are, however, against the push for a referendum.
