Opposition leader Raila Odinga now wants President Uhuru Kenyatta to act swiftly by taming ministers believed to be aiding graft in various government departments.
This comes amid Sh21 billion controversy believed to have been paid by Treasury for construction of two dams in Elgeyo-Marakwet County but investigations show nothing is yet to be done on the ground.
On Wednesday, Raila said Kenya could permanently go to the hands of graft lords if drastic measures are not taken to tame those mentioned in various graft schemes.
“We wake up daily to stories in the media of mega corruption scandals. We read stories of billions of shillings being paid for projects not implemented. We see billions of shillings being transferred to people in Italy, United Kingdom and others. Yet we don’t have stronger mechanisms to address this challenge,” Raila said when he launched the Pan-African Trade Unions Symposium.
“These people who are stealing are criminals and they should be dealt with as such. If they were in China, for example, they would be living in another world (sentenced to death).
"The corruption in Kenya makes people think we are living in outer space, not on this Earth. We should device radical means to deal with graft. If we let this continue, we will soon not have a country," Raila added as reported by the Standard.
Despite firing warning shots at his Cabinet, President Uhuru Kenyatta is yet to sack any of them. At Kisii last week, Uhuru insisted that his fight against graft will not be deterred by any external forces.
The latest scam could as well pronounce the end of an era of Henry Rotich, the Treasury Cabinet Secretary, Eugene Wamalwa of Devolution and Samson Chelugui of Water following the adverse mentioning of their departments.
