A 23-year-old man is being held at Kisii Central police station after he was arrested for allegedly defiling a 9-year-old girl.
The suspect identified as Cleophas Manono was arrested from his Bituko home in Nyatieko, Kitutu Chache South constituency on Tuesday.
Area chief Lawrence Omari said he rescued the suspect from angry members of the public who were beating him.
"I rushed to the homestead where the suspect was found in the act with the minor and rescued him from the jaws of death. He was surrendered to Kisii Central police station after locals threatened to storm Nyatieko administration police post to attack him" said Omari.
The chief also noted that the victim was taken to Nyatieko dispensary where she was treated and later discharged.
While commenting on the incident, Kisii police commander Martin Kibet said; "Men taking advantage of minors will not be spared by the law. Courts should also stop being too lenient on men raping minors."
The suspect is expected to be arraigned in court today (Wednesday) to face defilement charges.
