Members of the Akorino religious sect are often discriminated against in various forums of our society basically because of the turban they wear on their heads.

The Akorino religious sect was founded in the mid-1920s and widely claims its roots in Mt Kenya counties of Kiambu, Nyeri, Muranga among others.

But despite the existence of the sect for decades, not many people really understand this sect well which has many denominations under it.

For instance, there are those who think that all the Akorino are the same. Not at all because there exist many denominations whose way of worship and doctrines vary from each other.

Here, however, we focus on misconceptions that majority people have about Akorino girls.

1. Not exposed or outgoing: Many have a notion that Akorino girls are 'washamba'. This is due to the fact that they don a turban all the time. The reason they do it is because a woman's head is considered 'private' among the sect followers.

2. They maintain shaggy hair: If you ask many people, they will tell you that Akorino girls have unkempt hair. They can even tell you that they do not wash or shave their hair. This is only a fallacy.

3. Only speak Kikuyu: Many people think that the only language that any 'mukorino' including young educated girls can express themselves in or understand, is Gikuyu. It is not true. Many Akorino members are educated and can express themselves in any other language.

4. Cannot conform to modernity: Girls from this sect are sometimes perceived to be way too traditional and therefore, an outright mismatch for any modern man. This is just a wrong notion because Akorino girls can be as outgoing as any other girl, but only to the extent that their religious believes allow them.

5. Gor for circumcision: Well, they used to but the practice was abandoned the same time all other members of the Kikuyu community stopped the same.
