Just days after a group of Coast MPs vowed to form a regional party in a bid to back 'one of their own' in the 2022 presidential contest, Deputy President William Ruto can now take a sigh of relief as the lawmakers suddenly made a u-turn.
While speaking in Bura, Tana River on Thursday, a group of elected MPs declared that they will rally behind the DP in his bid to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta.
"We have made up our minds. As elected leaders from the Coast region, we shall rally behind Ruito's presidential candidature come 2022. It is an open secret," said Bura MP Ali Wario who had hosted the event.
“Those of us who have interacted and worked with William Ruto know and understand his style of leadership. We believe that he will bring the coastal people to the same level with the rest the country that are way ahead of us in all aspects of socio-economic development,” he added.
The legislator's comment comes at a time the region has become a key political battlegrounds with rivals keen to outmaneuver each other.
