Confirming the incident, area police boss Godfrey Rono said a lorry loaded with at least 12 donkeys had been interintercepted and is being held at Takaba police station as investigations kick off.
"It is true there has been a public outcry on mysterious disappearance of donkeys in Elwak. We have crucial leads and as we speak, a lorry ferrying a number of donkeys has been intercepted and is being in one of our stations here. We are yet to know the destination," Rono said.
Just a few days ago, Elwak residents staged a protest, issuing a one-week ultimatum to the police to uravel the faces behind the unexplained theft that has been happening for months now.
Locals claimed that at least 40 donkes have mysterioudly disappeared since the beginning of this year alone.
Even as this happens, the local administration has come under pressure over allegedly not doing enough.
