Deputy President William Ruto has disclosed that his candidature is not guaranteed in the approaching 2022 presidential contest.
In an interview with NTV from his Karen home on Sunday, the DP revealed that the ruling Jubilee Party is set for a nomination, after which one of its members will be given the go-ahead to vie.
He, therefore, noted that he is not the automatic candidate, with others within the party likely to emerge, vowing to support whoever is nominated in the event that he is not chosen.
''My candidature is not automatic. The party will nominate its candidate in 2022 and I hope that it will be me. I will, however, support whoever is nominated to vie on the party ticket if am not lucky,’’ he said.
Ruto further made it clear that there is no deal that was signed between him and President Uhuru Kenyatta compelling the President to support him in 2022.
He said that what brought them together before their 2013 win was the need to unify the nation which was then dangerously ethnically divided and not their personal political ambitions.
He added that just like him, the President will back whoever is nominated in the pending practice and does not necessarily have to be him.
"We never joined forces with an aim of retaining power but to reunite the nation and there is no agreement saying that Uhuru must support me in 2022. He too will support whoever is nominated,’’ he added.
