Muthama joined active politics in 2007 wining the Kangundo parliamentary seat.

He served as the Kangundo MP when the coalition government was formed after the 2007 post-poll violence.

Muthama, a critic of the government was quoted claiming that Deputy President William Ruto cried at his office while begging for his help.

The former senator alleged that the incident happened in 2009 when DP Ruto was the Minister for Agriculture.

Muthama claimed Ruto had been summoned to appear before a parliamentary committee on Agriculture to which he was a member.

He said Ruto was to respond to the maize scandal that had hit the ministry then.

“William Ruto wept in my office begging me to save him from being kicked out of parliament over the maize scandal,” Muthama said.

Muthama was addressing the press when he was appointed as a select committee member to discuss electoral reforms in the country in 2016.

Ruto had laughed off Muthama’s appointment claiming that he lacks negotiation and diplomacy skills.

The senator was forced to respond by alleging that Ruto cried at his office.
