Opposition chief Raila Odinga's wife, Ida Odinga was one of leaders who joined thousands of Kenyans at the University of Nairobi on Thursday evening, in a campaign targeting to end killing of innocent women.

The former Kenya High teacher was joined by Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang'i, who was present in solidarity with Kenyan women.

The event came amid reported killings of young women across the country, with most of their photos displayed during the vigil.

In a tweet, Mama Ida noted that giving the cases attention is a huge milestone towards managing the unnecessary murders.

"Attending the #HerLifeMatters vigil being hosted at @uonbi by women's organizations as part of the drive to #EndFemicideNow. I am glad that this issue is now being given the attention it deserves, and its my hope that with concerted efforts the scourge shall be reigned in," she tweeted.

On his part, Dr Matiang'i promised to reintroduce gender desks at police stations to specifically handle gender-based violence.

"I commit to revive the #GenderDesks in police stations to effectively deal with gender-based violence," he said.

Kirinyaga Governor Ann Waiguru said the society must wake up and protect young women from raising violence. She said their lives should not be cut short because of poverty.

"We must do more as a society to protect young women. The promise of their potential should never be cut short by the poverty of society's values.#HerLifeMatters," Waiguru said.

Also present were Supreme Court Judge Njoki Ndung'u, MPs; Gladys Wanga, Rosa Buyu, Esther Passaris among other female leaders.
