For years now, Kisii County has been hitting the media headlines because of the high number of road carnage and the ignorance of the road rules which has led to a high death toll.
With the notorious PSV and the Toyota Probox on the road, there are some routes that have become constant killers taking away lives and causing permanent damages to survivors.
Kisii - Kilgoris highway
This route connects various villages and outcasts of Kisii town, including Ogembo town. This road serves thousands of people daily.
However, the road has claimed various lives due to overspeeding and the unfavourable road topology.
Toyota probox, which carry up to 14 passengers at a go, have possed a threat to those on board and other road users. This route is known for killing five Kenyatta University student at Etora area in Sameta on July 1st 2016.
Kisii - Rongo highway
The road, which is currently under construction for expansion, is another dangerous road in Kisii County. The narrow road bearly accommodates two oncoming heavy truck which makes it difficult for swift movement.
Moreover, the matatu will speed to make more tips for profits. Overloading is a normal lifestyle on the road to an extent which the 14 seaters matatu will move with its slide door open and passengers dangerously hanging on.
Kisii - Keroka highway
So far the road has killed hundreds of people this year. The sharp bends and the poorly marked road has been some of the causes of the multiple accidents.
The Toyota probox and matatus that ply this route will away have a space for 'one more' passenger. The drivers will barely reach the gearstick because of the chronic overloading
With the traffic police monitoring traffic on these roads, nothing has seemed to change yet.
