Residents in Uasin Gishu are mourning the death of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s childhood driver who also served as a guard during former President Daniel Moi's reign.
Leonard Yator, who was famously known as Arap Chomber, died of heart complications at a hospital in Eldoret on Thursday.
Led by Daniel Biwott, the residents eulogised Yator as a faithful and trustworthy man.
“Mzee Chomber has left a legacy that should be emulated by our youths. We have heard of the long period in which he provided security for Presidents Kenyatta and Moi. This shows that he was faithful and trustworthy,” said Biwott, a farmer in Kapaseret.
The farmer further lauded Yator for enabling many youths from Kesses to join the military.
On his part, Kiplagat Kogo remembered Yator for dedicating his life to protecting the two presidents, noting that he depicted humility and resilience.
“Huyo Mzee alifanya hata Mzee Moi akakuja mpaka eneo hili kutembea kwake. Aliaminika sana serikaliani. (Mzee Moi even came to this area to visit Yator's home. He was a trusted man in government),” said Kogo.
Yator who is survived by two wives and seven children is said to be the longest-serving member of the Presidential Escort Unit.
