A group of Kenyans conspired to defraud various US government offices by posing as Information Technologists from Dell Company
According to the prosecutors in Alexandria Federal Court as reported by Washington Post, the Kenyans posed as employees from Dell and scammed a Northern Virginia locality to a tune of over 60 million shillings.
Robert Muli, a 60-year-old Kenyan immigrant living in Ohio State pleaded guilty when he appeared in court on Monday
The court report indicated that Muli conspired with other Kenyans within the country (Kenya) to execute their scamming plans.
According to the report, one of the alleged conmen from Kenya could email US local governments and pose as an employee from Dell or other service providers
He would then ask for payments but through Muli who, who would then withdraw the cash immediately before channelling it into various accounts.
Sources indicate that experts from the government managed to cancel some of the transactions in time and that measures have been put in place to prevent the same from happening in future
“The fraud was committed by external parties. An internal review of the case was completed and new internal safeguards and procedures are now in place to prevent this type of crime from occurring in the future,” said county spokesman Tony Castrilli as reported by Washington Post
Muli had planned to flee from the US but was arrested when he was about to jet out. He will be sentenced on October 4 and faces up to 20 years in prison.
