Cherengany MP Joshua Kutuny has defended President Uhuru Kenyatta's visit to China to secure a further Sh368 billion funding for the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).
Kutuny says the President has every right to seek external funding for projects that will uplift the lives of Kenyans.
Speaking on NTV’s Sidebar on Tuesday night, the MP told off critics questioning the China visit terming them as enemies of development.
He accused some politicians of playing politics with the country's development agenda.
Kutuny said President Kenyatta understands Kenya’s economy and cannot plunge it into debts as some politicians are purporting.
“We know foreign debt is a matter of concern but I think we are still within the borrowing limits and the president knows that,” he said.
The Cherangany lawmaker observed that the government can only advance its development agenda by borrowing.
The MP, however, admitted that there is a need for the country to stay within the debt limits to avoid falling into an economic crisis.
President Kenyatta and opposition leader Raila Odinga are in China to negotiate for the SGR loan. If granted, the loan will be used to construct the SGR from Naivasha to Kisumu.
A section of Kenyans and leaders have raised fears over Kenya’s appetite for Chinese loans. On Saturday, Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jnr warned that Chinese loans pose a threat to Kenya’s’ sovereignty.
