Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka's request to Raila Odinga's Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party not to field a candidate in the upcoming Embakasi South parliamentary by-election has been turned down.
Raila's party has announced that it will field a candidate in the upcoming by-election.
Speaking to journalists at Orange House in Nairobi on Tuesday, ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna laughed off Kalonzo's request.
Sifuna said ODM party does not owe Wiper anything, adding that Kalonzo's party betrayed Raila.
"Wiper abandoned us when we needed them most and they cannot demand us to support their candidate," Sifuna said.
He said Kalonzo betrayed Raila when he skipped the former Prime Minister Raila Odinga's swearing in as the People's President on January 30, 2018.
Kalonzo has urged Raila's party to support Wiper candidate, Julius Mawathe in the by-election in the spirit of the handshake.
Speaking to journalists after chairing the party's National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting at the party headquarters in Nairobi on Tuesday, Kalonzo claimed that he has reached out to Raila for support.
The former Vice President said Embakasi South parliamentary seat belongs to Wiper party.
He noted that the seat is the only one occupied by Wiper in Nairobi.
"I have reached out to my brother Raila Odinga to support us in the Embakasi South parliamentary by-election," Kalonzo said.
The seat was declared vacant after the Supreme Court nullified Mawathe's election on grounds that it was not free and fair.
The election petition was filed by former ODM MP Ishard Mohamed Sumra.
The by-election is set for April 5.
