A primary school teacher died on the spot while two Administration Police (AP) officers sustained serious injuries following a banditry attack in Turkana on Wednesday.
The incident occurred after a police Land Cruiser was sprayed with bullets by bandits in Turkana East Sub-County.
Confirming the incident, Turkana County Police boss Mr Samuel Ndanyi said the police vehicle was headed to Lokori shopping centre from Napeitom area when it was attacked.
"The attack occurred at around 9.30am. A male Napeitom primary school teacher has been pronounced dead and two police officers were injured," said Ndanyi as quoted by the Daily Nation.
The injured officers are currently admitted at the Lokori AIC health centre.
The police commander further revealed that officers from the dreaded General Service Unit (GSU) and the Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU) have been deployed to the area to flush out the bandits.
The attack has also attracted the attention of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) which has condemned the incident, threatening that teachers attached to insecure areas would consider withdrawing their services unless Interior CS Fred Matiang'i assures them of their safety.
Led by Turkana Branch chairperson Kenyaman Ariong'oa, Knut maintained that tutors and locals along the volatile Turkana-Baringo border are highly susceptible to banditry attacks.
