A sponsor as known to many is a person or an organization that has responsibility for another, especially religious, legal or financial aspects. However, this has gained a new meaning among the young people and it refers to the sugar mummies or the sugar daddies who want sexual favours from the ladies or gentlemen in exchange for money. The increasing relationship among the two parties is most alarming and is escalating rapidly among the university students. Some of the common causes attributed to this include;
1. Poverty
They say poverty is a disease and hence one would take any chance given to prevent, cure or alleviate it. Most of the young people from poor backgrounds with the dreams of changing their past always fall for sponsors with the promise of more money and hence a more luxurious life.
2. Peer influence
Most of the young ladies and gentlemen are also influenced by their peers who most probably have gained apart from dealing with sponsors. This makes them want to be on the same level and not to be left out and hence leading to them falling victims.
3. Curiosity
Curiosity killed the cat is what they say but to the young generation, it is a colloquial expression which has gained a new meaning, exploring. Most of the young people when joining campus are moved by the curiosity to know more and this finds most of them in 'sponsor' relationships due to the greed for more money or as a result of their age of being most sexually active.
