Census entails total count of a population in certain geographical space within a specified time.
In Kenya, it takes place after 10 years before one is conducted. The 2019 census is scheduled for 24th/25th to 31st August 2019.
This will be the 8th time Kenya is holding a census.
The past ones were held in 1948, 1962, 1969, 1979, 1989, 1999, 2009.
The exercise involves Kenya National Bureau of Statistics in collaboration with different Ministries, Departments, Non-governmental sectors, learning institutions and different agencies.
Anyone who will be within the Kenyan boundaries on the night of 24th will be counted during the exercise. It will not matter whether a Kenyan or a visitor.
This exercise helps the government on distributing different resources as well as knowing the exact living standards of people as well as their access to basic needs.
The biometrics will not be used in this exercise, the exercise will be guided by the use of UN principles and Recommendations for population and housing census.
The different questions in the questionnaire written in English or Kiswahili will be answered by the head of that household. If they are not there, any responsible family member will take that role.
The registering clerks will be given a reflector, a card from Kenya National Bureau of Statistics and will be accompanied by village elders to avoid frauds.
Security will be provided and the results of the exercise will be displayed to the public through, "www.knbs.or.ke" after being launched.
