President Uhuru Kenyatta has responded to Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria who had criticised him for neglecting the Mt Kenya region despite residents voting for him overwhelmingly in the 2017 general polls.
The outspoken MP argued that the region has lagged behind in terms of development under the leadership of President Kenyatta.
"I want to say this, as we come to the end of 2018, I want you to think seriously about your habit of voting in large numbers only to end up missing out on development projects," said Kuria during an event at Thika Stadium of New Year's Eve.
His remarks were welcomed by a section of leaders while others castigated him, arguing that he had disrespected the Head of State.
The MP was forced to apologise to the President following the backlash he received from leaders in the region.
Speaking on Monday during the launch of the Mama Ngina Drive waterfront project in Mombasa, President Kenyatta said he will ensure that every part of Kenya enjoys the fruits of development, adding that he will not be intimidated by petty politics.
He further noted that development projects will no longer be carried out on the basis of where a leader comes from. He slammed those politicising the handshake between him and opposition chief Raila Odinga, arguing that it was aimed at resolving historical injustices by healing the nation.
"I will ensure every corner of this country gets development. That way, these politics of patronage will end so that all areas can grow regardless of who is in power. Kwa hivo hawa washenzi waachane na mimi (let those idiots stop bothering me),” Kenyatta said amid cheers from the crowd.
Other leaders who attended the function include Tourism Cs Najib Balala, ODM leader Raila Odinga and Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho.
