In a phone call with Iran's President Hassan Rouhani, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson made a passionate appeal for de-escalation, the Guardian newspaper has reported.

The uncertain situation in the region worsened after the killing of Qassem Soleimani, a top Iranian military commander killed in a US airstrike.

Also on the agenda was the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) signed between Iran and major world powers from which the United States of America pulled out.

"They discussed the situation in the region following the death of Qassem Suleimani and the prime minister called for an end to hostilities,” a Downing Street spokesman said as quoted by the Guardian.

“The prime minister underlined the UK commitment to the JCPOA and to ongoing dialogue to avoid nuclear proliferation and reduce tension. He raised the continued detention and mistreatment of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe and other dual nationals in Iran, and called for their immediate release," he added.

The assassination of Qassem Soleimani has heightened tensions in the region as Iran maintains that it will exact vengeance.

Western forces operating in the Middle East have abandoned the war on the Islamic State and are now focusing on defending themselves against Iranian attacks.
