Over 30 workers of Ukwala Supermarket in Eldoret on Wednesday protested what they termed as arbitrary dismissal.
Led by Daniel Kayanda, a shop steward, the sacked workers said it is sad that the supermarket had dismissed them without giving prior notice.
“As workers of Ukwala supermarket, we are not happy with our dismissal since on Tuesday we did our job as required only to be told in the evening that our services are no longer needed,” Kayanda told to the press.
He noted that their rights have been infringed and asked the Central organization of Trade Unions (COTU) secretary-general Francis Atwoli to intervene.
Uasin Gishu COTU chairman Peter Odima who addressed the press condemned the incident and challenged the county labour officer to take action against the supermarket.
“Labour laws demand that an employer must issue a notice of termination of work to an employee in advance before dismissing him or her. What Ukwala did is against the law and stern actions should be taken against them,” said Odima.
He further said if the Ukwala Supermarket will not follow the labour laws, it should close its business and take to a country where there is no law.
