US-based lawyer Makau Mutua has weighed in on the members of parliament demand of increased allowances. Speaking during an interview on Citizen’s JKL on Wednesday, Mutua said that it is unfortunate that lawmakers are demanding for more allowances when the taxpayers are suffering.
The lawyer said that the leaders have proven that they cannot change much about this country.
He questioned where the taxes have been going yet legislators want their allowances increased. He said that the referendum is among the best ways to handle the matter.
Makau noted that through the referendum the wage bill will be reduced to save some money for other projects in the government.
“Some things just astound me. You know you live in this country very well you know the last five or six years money has dried up. You know that the cost of living has gone up. You know that citizens are being overtaxed and you also know that and you know that it is clear where this tax money is going to,” he said.
“We don’t know what use it is being put. And on top of that, these individuals who call themselves members of parliament and I must tell you it is a blooded parliament and that is why a referendum is necessary to reduce them.”
The remarks come at a time when MPs are demanding Sh.250, 000 monthly house allowance.
