A court in Homa Bay has sentenced a man to 12 years in prison after he was found guilty of manslaughter from an incidence that happened 4 years ago.
Appearing before Homa Bay High Court Judge Joseph Karanja, Albert Otieno Odongo was spared murder charges and charged for manslaughter after it emerged that he didn't intend to kill his wife who died as a result of his actions.
The court heard that the convict in the company of others assaulted and killed Eunice Atieno Olal at their home at Kotieno Village, Kasimba Sub-Location in Rachuonyo constituency.
According to prosecutor Valerie Ongeti, the incident followed an argument between the couple, after the man accused the deceased of stealing his Kshs 8, 000.
The court was told that the accused then left for a local drinking joint before returning with other men with whom they assaulted the deceased.
He then reported the death at a local police station, blaming it on unknown assailants.
“A report from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations indicates that Odongo lied to police yet they had killed his wife in the bedroom,” the prosecutor was quoted by the Standard.
Four witnesses testified against the suspect who after denying the charges pleaded for leniency, saying that he is the one who has been looking after their children.
“I plead for leniency because I am the one who is taking care of my children because their mother disappeared after we disagreed,” he said.
