The decomposing body of a man was found in Gucha River, Kisii County on Thursday.
The body of the man who could not be identified immediately by residents was discovered by a local fisherman.
Confirming the incident, Kisii Police Commander Martin Kibet said a fisherman raised alarm when he spotted the decomposing body floating on the water.
"Members of the public rushed to the scene after an alarm was raised. Residents could not recognise the deceased person. Police officers from Igare were notified about the incident by area local assistant chief," said Kibet.
The commander noted that the body was badly decomposed as the body parts split when touched.
Kibet said that the man might have drowned after drowning in the river.
"The body was retrieved by police with the help of members of the public before it was taken to the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital morgue where his fingerprints will be taken for identification," noted the commander.
Kibet urged the public to be calm and allow the police to investigate the matter.
He called on residents to be cautious when crossing rivers to avoid being carried away by floodwaters.
