A man on Tuesday surrendered his firearm to the police in Nakuru County following a directive by Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i.
Rift Valley Police Commander Edward Mwamburi said the 60-year-old man surrendered his pistol and 22 bullets.
Last week on Friday, Matiang’i issued a seven-day ultimatum to 4,407 unregistered gun holders to surrender their weapons.
He warned that the gun holders would be declared armed and dangerous criminals if they fail to present themselves for vetting.
Mwamburi was quoted by the Standard saying that the man who surrendered his gun did not undergo vetting in February and that they have launched investigations to establish why he had a gun.
“One individual surrendered a pistol to Officer Commanding Station (OCS) Nakuru, after the CS' directive. We need to establish how long the man has been having the pistol and what he has been using it for,” said the police boss as quoted by the Standard.
The elderly man is said to be a large-scale farmer in Olenguruone, Kuresoi South Constituency. The pistol and 22 bullets were taken to the ballistics unit for examination.
While warning that stern measures would be taken against any person found with illegal firearms, Mwamburi said a number of guns were confiscated by the Firearms Licensing Board during civilian firearm vetting conducted at Rift Valley regional offices.
“Officers who conducted civilian firearm vetting confiscated 58 guns, and we are expecting about 100 that are in illegal hands,” he noted.
