Talam, who is the Director of Communications in the DP's office, said Ruto was ready for constitutional amendments and noted that whatever the referendum question will be, the second-in-command will side with the masses.

In a tweet on Wednesday, Talam claimed there was a person desiring to have a confrontation with Ruto over constitutional reforms, noting the DP was not ready for such an exercise.

"Someone is desperately craving for a showdown with DP WsR (William Samoei Ruto) over some imaginary referendum. DP is not in the mood for it. His position is that of the people. Bring the question," he said in a tweet in which he tagged Majority Leaders Aden Duale (National Assembly) and Kipchumba Murkomen (Senate).

The DP's camp has been sending mixed reactions over the referendum debate, with some allies welcoming the idea and others claiming there was a hidden agenda behind calls to amend the Constitution, particularly through the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI).

"I want a referendum to happen before 2022 based on the 'Handshake'- that is the element of inclusivity, and reduction of divisive politics that take us to post-election violence after every five years," said Duale during an interview on Citizen TV on Tuesday night.

Ruto on Sunday asked those engaging on the referendum debate to be objective and noted calls to amend the supreme law won't distract the government from fulfilling its election pledges.

"The JUBILEE administration will NOT be distracted from delivering on our manifesto and HE's big 4 plan by those engaged in the raging debate on Punguza Mizigo, BBI or 2022. They should be objective, truthful and conduct an honest conversation that is in the BEST INTEREST OF US All," he tweeted.
