Renowned lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi has hit out at Chief Magistrate Douglas Ogoti for slapping Samburu Governor Moses Kasaine LenolKulal with Sh100 million cash bail in a fuel fraud case.
Lawyer Abdullahi took to his Twitter account on Wednesday castigating the magistrate saying, "When a court of law sets bail at Sh100 million for Samburu Governor, it shows 2 things: 1. That the magistrate is plainly incompetent and must be removed from office or 2. He is playing to the public gallery and is thus not exercising decisional independence."
The magistrate's decision is continuing to elicit reactions among Kenyans, with a section of social media users supporting it.
The Samburu county boss on Wednesday moved to the High Court to push for a review of the cash bail.
Through his lawyer Paul Nyamodi, the governor termed the cash bail as 'outrageous and ridiculous'.
Lenolkulal who spent Tuesday night at the Industrial Area Prison says he cannot afford the Sh100 million cash bail.
Lenolkulal pleaded not guilty to charges of abuse of office, illegal acquisition of public property and conflict of interest.
He also pleaded not guilty to a charge of conspiring to commit an economic crime.
The governor is accused of allegedly trading with the Samburu county government through Oryx Service Station for the supply of fuel worth Sh84, 695, 995.55.
