President Uhuru Kenyatta's Twitter handle may have been hacked by unknown people due to his firm stand on the fight against corruption, a senior State House official has said.
The president's communication team was forced to deactivate all his social media accounts, claiming that someone may have gained unauthorised access to them without their knowledge.
A statement from Chief of Staff Nzioka Waita, however, assured Kenyans that necessary measures would be undertaken to ensure that normalcy is restored. Uhuru largely uses social media to update the public on his activities.
"On account of unauthorised access to the official social media handles of H.E the President of the Republic of Kenya Uhuru Kenyatta, all official social media handles for the President have been temporarily suspended to allow for the necessary remedial measures to be undertaken," said Nzioka.
Mr Nzioka, a confidant of the president, further said that the unpredictable cybercrime could have been precipitated by Uhuru's firm stand in the fight against corruption.
Before the accounts were deactivated, Uhuru had issued a stern warning to anyone engaging in corruption including his political allies, friends and family members, insisting that he will not tire to fight back.
"It seems the President’s stand on corruption has generated all manner of reactions," said Nzioka in a tweet.
Deputy President William Ruto's allies have been in the frontline opposing the war against corruption, saying that it is part of the wider scheme to scuttle the DP's 2022 political ambitions. He's expected to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta.
