A 26-year-old man who allegedly hacked into Equity Bank accounts and made away with more than Sh400,000 was arrested by detectives on Wednesday evening in Bomet.
The detectives recovered mobile phones and several ID cards from Peter Cheruiyot when they arrested him during an operation at Mulot trading centre.
The suspect is being interrogated over cases relating to cybercrime which have escalated in the county.
Bomet East Sub-County Police Commander James Kilonzo claimed the suspect will help detectives in apprehending other cybercriminals.
“It is suspected that he committed the crime over the last one week and has been on our radar. Today we managed to arrest him,” said Kilonzo.
Kilonzo added that police were committed to looking into the suspects in an effort to cub cyber-crime.
Dozens of residents in Mulot area have lost a lot of money due to increased cybercrime cases in the area.
Early this year, Rift Valley Regional Police Commander Edward Mwamburi pointed out that cyber-crime specialists had been tasked with investigating individuals behind the high rate of cybercrime in the region.
The target of the cyber attacks in most cases have been M-Pesa users and agents. Politicians and senior government officials have also fallen victims of cybercrime.
